As I continue on my outdoor design series, I am going to talk to you today about how to decorate a patio on a budget. Because, well, summer is around the corner and I believe with every ounce of my being that you should be maximizing every single piece of real estate you have in your home. Even if your patio is tiny, decorate it!

Okay, so, how do you decorate a patio on a budget? Let me count the ways...
First, and this is obvious, but, shop at the stores you know that are in your price range BUT, that also add design value. I always want to blend cost with beauty - something could be inexpensive but ugly. NO. Don't do it. Don't just go after the sale item. You do need to LOVE what you are buying and it should be decent quality. That way, you are likely to have it longer and thus, saving you money in the long haul. A few of my favorite stores for outdoor decor are: Target (duh), Hayneedle, World Market and All Modern.
Second, it is all about the rug. I think outdoor rugs literally make or break a patio. Adding an affordable yet durable outdoor rug - or layering rugs - to your patio will give it warmth, will create a more inviting space and it will make it more comfortable to lounge.
Here are a few of my favorite outdoor rugs that are an incredible value for the design. And note - I have personally found that a rug that says "indoor/outdoor" is not actually a good choice for true outdoor. Meaning, if you know your rug is going to get wet, is in an area that isn't shaded or covered, go for the outdoor only option. If you have a fully covered area that receives minimal weather impact, "indoor/outdoor" is perfectly fine!
Third, pillows. Similar to a rug, pillows can really round out the design of any space, especially a patio. And updating pillows is a VERY easy approach to decorate a patio on a budget! Typically you only need 2-3 and they will offer just the right amount of cohesion and visual aesthetic to make your patio truly feel like a living space.
Last week I rounded up my top 9 favorite outdoor pillows under $20 so you can reference that again to get inspiration!
Fourth, lighting. Nothing says let's dine al fresco for dinner than the right patio lighting.
Since I live in Miami, I have tried various executions of outdoor patio lighting that stand the test of time and, um, hurricanes so I have found that you need to consider weather with the types of lights you buy. If you live in California and you have a 150 square foot balcony, you are probably fine to by any lighting. Point is - GET THE LIGHTS! HANG THE LIGHTS! Target's selection is perfect - everything from colored lights to high durable weather proof. Start there!
Last but not least - poufs. Poufs are both versatile and beautiful. They serve as both a foot rest and extra seating. They are good for adults and kids alike. I like to have 1-2 on a patio to again, bring in color, texture and warmth. Here are a few from Target that I am loving right now!
Okay, do you feel ready to decorate a patio on a budget?! I hope so!
